The Professor’s Journal

Before you open it

He would not have wanted any of this in print.

What follows are pages from the journal my professor gave me, the one I described in the prologue: leather, soft at the corners, filled almost to the back in a small, cramped hand. He kept it for forty years, from the autumn of 1972 to the spring of 2012.

I chose them the way he taught me to choose anything: by what they show, not by how they make him look. Some of these pages make him look cold. Some make him look cruel, and a few make him look lonely in a way I did not understand while he was alive. I have left them as they are.

He would not have wanted any of this in print. I said so in the book, and I say it again here so that nobody mistakes this for his choice. It is mine.

S.V., from Before You Open It

Forty years. Six parts.

His entries are cold, short and dated. Soren’s notes sit beside them, signed with his initials.

A marionette control hanging in a dark library, its strings running down into shadow
  1. The Seventies

Watching. A young researcher learning to see faces, habits, hunger and groups.

  2. The Eighties

The hand. Cases of deliberate manipulation, and the predator pages with the shaky note.

  3. The Nineties

Currents and courts. The automatic triggers, and power held over years.

  4. The Two Thousands

The entries turn inward, slowly, without his noticing.

  5. The Student

The boy at the back of the lecture hall, the first dinner, and the night he decided.

  6. The Last Entries

Shorter and shakier. The last written line, then eleven blank pages.

Read it after the book. It pays off what the book leaves open.

He has the hunger, and no one has told him what it costs.

Questions before you begin.

Plain answers.

What is The Professor’s Journal?

A companion to The Marionette Principle: the journal the book was built from, with the professor’s entries from 1972 to 2012 in his own words, Soren’s notes beside them, and thirteen plates reproducing handwritten pages.

Should I read it before the book?

No. Read it after the epilogue. It pays off the book’s open threads and spoils the ending if you open it first. Its title page says the same.

Is anything left out?

Yes, and it says so. Names and identifying places are removed, six lines appear as black bars, and pages 212 to 219 are withheld. Soren explains why in Before You Open It and After It Closes.

In what order should I read them?

The Marionette Principle first. The Tell alongside Second Face, Method 2. The Reply Book nearby while you read, and after. The Professor’s Journal last, after the epilogue, because it spoils the ending if you open it early.

When will I get it?
